A Guide To Choosing Flooring

Though often part of a larger renovation, new flooring or tile can make a huge impact all on its own. And with Vinyl Plank Flooring, Laminate, Tile, Carpet, & Hardwood, the choices are better and more affordable than ever before. But more choice doesn’t always make things easier. Our flooring experts at J&H complete ongoing training on all the new products and installation methods. Vinyl plank is hands-down the fastest growing floor choice, but did you know some are better in certain applications? Let us know how and where your new flooring will be used and we will guide you to the products that will deliver the highest satisfaction.

Laminate

Pros

Cons

In the 1990’s and early 2000’s laminate’s affordability and ease of installation (with the introduction of the click-in locking system) made it the popular choice for residential renovations. Though its popularity has been over-shadowed by the improvements in vinyl flooring in recent years, laminate remains a great choice for the budget conscious and for those looking for a durable, low-maintenance flooring choice.

Vinyl Plank

Pros

Cons

Vinyl has come a long way, baby. Vinyl has been gaining in popularity over the past couple decades due to its versatility and accessibility. If you’re looking for an affordable, durable, moisture resistant flooring that’s easy to install, look no further than vinyl. And with this popularity comes better products, with improvements in materials and installation. When shopping for vinyl it’s important to know the types that are available and the pros and cons of each. Due to its limestone composition, SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) vinyl flooring provides superior dent & scratch resistance. This makes it a great choice for households with children or pets. Because of its “harder” composition, this type of vinyl may be louder than softer vinyl planks. While most vinyl flooring has click-in installation, loose-lay vinyl is surging in popularity due to its ease of installation. As the name suggests, it simply lays flat on the floor, making it an easy DIY. If you’re looking for extra moisture protection, sheet vinyl is still a great choice, as it has fewer seams and fewer points of entry for leaks. Vinyl planks mimic the look of hardwood, while vinyl tiles resemble stone tile or even patterned mosaics.

Floor Tile

Pros

Cons

Floor tile offers incredible variety – colour, texture, style, size, material, grout, and installation pattern are all important considerations when shopping for tile. It’s where designers and installers alike can showcase their skills. We offer a wide selection of in-stock tiles, as well as almost unlimited choices by special order. Wall Tile

Pros

Cons

From timeless subway tile to trendier mosaics and patterns, a tile backsplash can define a space. Keep it monochromatic and play with texture to add depth. Choose tried-and-true subway tile but have it installed in a unique pattern (herring bone, stacked, zig-zagged, vertical – there are no wrong answers here!) to get a custom look without being too trendy. Or have it installed in a more traditional pattern and compare matching vs contrasting grout. Be bold and get a bright pop of colour. Add instant character to a new home with on-trend patterns. The potential is endless. We offer a wide selection of in-stock tiles, as well as almost unlimited choices by special order. Have something in mind but can’t find it? Carpet

Pros

Cons

Remember carpet rakes? Gone are the days of that wall-to-wall shag where the dirt, dander and bacteria just quietly settled to the bottom, causing an onslaught of sniffles and sneezing to unknowing homeowners. Carpet manufacturers have stepped up their game and now offer an almost endless selection of attractive colours, patterns and textures, with attention to our health with tighter weaves, hypoallergenic materials, and lower VOC levels. Hardwood

Pros

Cons

If budget allows, nothing quite surpasses the beauty of hardwood floors. But take note: some types of wood are softer than others (and will scratch more easily) and, although engineered hardwoods will save you money, many do not have the longevity of traditional solid wood floors. In fact, depending on the thickness of the top layer, engineered hardwood may not be able to be sanded down at all. So, if you’re drawn to hardwood because it can be refinished, be careful what type you select. However, engineered woods are made up of layers which increase the stability of the product, making it the better choice where you have humidity & temperature changes, like in basements.
